HOW DO WE COMPARE?

DUBLIN ACADEMY
WARNING #1

This is the only company that we know of that does not allow their students to rewatch their classes on-demand.

Instead, your only option is to pay more money to watch older recordings instead.

WARNING #2

This company’s classes are taught in hybrid form, i.e. they consist of both online and in-person students in the same classes at the same time.

We believe that such classes offer little difference compared with watching freely available pre-recorded videos.

Information provided is based on after-school Leaving Cert maths classes. Regular prices shown rounded to the nearest euro. A feature is considered not included if it is not explicitly mentioned on the class details page. Any screenshots shown above have been sent to us by parents or students. As such, they have been linked to externally as they are not considered property of exams.ie and we are not responsible for their content. A class is considered large unless a maximum class size of less than ten is stated on the class details page. We do not make any claims as to the legitimacy of any public reviews included above. Information correct as of 1st August 2024.

In general, when purchasing any online product or service, online reviews should be taken with a grain of salt.

The legitimacy of such reviews cannot be verified and, even if reviews are genuine, they may still be inflated due to incentives.

As such, we instead recommend focusing on the negative reviews of any educational support company that you are considering.

Below, we have therefore highlighted some such reviews for this company.
Dublin Academy Reviews (Sources)
“I have a family member that expressed an interest in this school, their experience is that the school is only interested in maintaining and achieving their targeted high percentage overall yearly grade to keep their flow of students and revenue…”
(Continued) “…A student’s personal wellbeing would not be as highly prioritised, their goals are more focused on their business model…”
(Continued) “…Personally, I would strongly consider that one is more cognisant of this before investing over €9,000 a year. Your child’s education, self esteem and mental health is paramount. Consider carefully.”

WARNING #2

This company’s classes are taught in hybrid form, i.e. they consist of both online and in-person students in the same classes at the same time.

Such an approach further reduces the effectiveness of the classes by making already large classes even larger.

Institute of Education Reviews (Sources)
“I admire whoever owns the institute they’ve expertly ripped off hundreds of students. The notes are not worth it. Student support is embarrassingly non existant. Teachers regularly comment on how they don’t care about the students…”
“Rubbish, absolute waste of time, unsupportive staff, incompetent teachers, waste of time and money. Coming from a current student too, please don’t go there”
(Employee review)
“Staff overworked, mass resignations in non teaching departments and in part-time staff. No benefits, no respect, HR was let go and staff not informed until a replacement showed up a month later. No autonomy and unrealistic expectations and demands to work beyond contract hours and do numerous roles.”
(Employee review)
“Lack of communication and transparency between management and staff. Shady management decisions with regards to roles and promises.”
(Employee review)
“Senior management are dangerously incompetent, and ignore complaints made to them. Human resources are puppets for senior management, and are not there to represent the employee – rather, exist as an extra layer to keep those at the top safe.

BREAKTHROUGH MATHS
WARNING #1

This company does not state a maximum class size in advance.

We believe that such classes offer little difference compared with watching freely available pre-recorded videos.

WARNING #1

This company has used fake reviews (Example).

We therefore recommend extreme caution when taking their reviews at face value.

WARNING #2

This company has made the bizarre claim that “class size is irrelevant” if the students do not see or interact with each other (Source).

This is, of course, marketing nonsense.

In reality, our students also only interact with the teacher, and this is true of all online classes that we know of.

The issue with large classes is the severe lack (if any) of one-to-one student-teacher interactions.

This is highlighted by this company’s open admittance that the teacher and students only talk “infrequently” to each other (Source).

We strongly discourage any students from getting their support from companies that falsely claim that large groups grinds lacking in personal discussion can ever “feel like 1-1 grinds”.

Breakthrough Maths Reviews (Sources)
“Very expensive for group grinds. Not at all individualsed to what students needs are just follow a curriculum… felt very little was covered in the hr and no real understanding or time if student hadn’t grasped the subject.”
“…her class started off small with 7 students and had 13 yesterday . Unfortunately there is a lot of time wasted with people not set up properly etc so students are just sitting waiting and not getting sufficient class work done . If this was a 1 to 1 or even less than 5 kids it would be much more beneficial especially for the money we pay. But I feel there isn’t enough work now with the 13 students and far too much general conversations going on…”
“…there were over 20 children in the class and not a lot of 1:1 teaching. Would prefer to pay for a smaller class.”
“Not good, would give 0 if possible.”
“…I needed to tell you to not pay the outrageous €31 a week for this useless course.”

WEEKLY CLASSES

Taught in small groups (max 8 students).

Classes are given by Dr. Ciarán Kenny,
head of Exams.ie.

Our live classes will be recorded so that they may be rewatched on demand.

High engagement – heavy focus on asking and answering questions.

BONUS #1

Our Spark membership is included for free!
(See below for details.)

BONUS #2

Access to all of our midterm revision courses is included for free!

Only €15 per week!

Discounted price of €10 only available to those who sign up before September!

Our classes are typically broken into the following five stages.

1) RETENTION

The first 5 – 10 minutes are spent checking if each student recalls and still understands the material from the previous week’s class.

This is of particular importance if the material of the current class directly relies on a deep understanding of the material from the previous class.

2) NEW CONCEPTS

The teacher then introduces and explains the new concept(s).

Throughout this stage, the teacher will be frequently checking each student’s understanding by asking them questions.

3) INTRODUCTORY ASSESSMENT

The teacher & students will then go through some questions together.

The teacher will ask one student how to do the first step of a question, then another how to do the next step etc.

4) INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT

The students will then go through some questions by themselves.

The teacher will continuously ask students how they are getting on and will encourage them to ask for help if they get stuck.

5) REFLECTION

In the last five minutes, the class as a whole will discuss whether they feel if this topic has “clicked” and whether they feel confident in moving on to a different topic in the next class or not.

The teacher will then make recommendations on which of our included practice questions to attempt before the next class.

Students will also be reminded that, if they get stuck attempting any of these questions, they can ask for immediate video support each school day while that issue is fresh in their mind rather than waiting until the next class.

This structure is very flexible and may differ in certain classes depending on the material that is being discussed.

The current available times for each of our classes can be found right here!

Our classes are currently available for the following subjects:

Leaving Cert
6th HL Maths
6th HL Applied Maths
5th HL Maths

All of the features and resources that are included can be found right here!

Comparison of our classes with other websites can be found right here!

Yes! All of our live classes will be recorded and can be rewatched on-demand until the end of the school year (30th June).

We limit our classes to a maximum of 8 students as there is a large focus on students asking and answering questions throughout the class.

Not at all!
We understand that some students may feel uncomfortable showing their face in an online setting.
In contrast, a microphone is necessary as students will be expected to ask and answer questions.

Feel free to either email us at [email protected] or message us at +353 85 121 4117.

EXAMS.IE SPARKS

Each membership includes all of the following features.

1) LIVE 1-1 VIDEO SUPPORT

Students receive a live & interactive “mini one-to-one grind” every school day.

(A unique feature only found on exams.ie!)

Available in all of our subjects.

2) H1 NOTES

H1 notes that cover every topic in detail are also included.

Unlike notes elsewhere, our notes are animated, thereby making it easier for students to grasp the more difficult topics.

Available in all of our Leaving Cert subjects.

3) WORKSHEETS

In addition, students receive 1,000+ worksheet questions to test their understanding of the material.

Each question includes both answers & solutions, thereby providing students with immediate feedback with their progress.

Available in all of our subjects.

4) MOCK EXAMS

Also included are our mock exams (& solutions), allowing students to prepare for their final exams.

Each exam can be sorted both by paper and by topic so that students can focus on their weaker areas.

Available in all of our subjects.

5) REVISION SHEETS

Finally, our Sparks also include condensed revision sheets that cover the most important aspects of each topic.

As with our notes, these sheets are also animated so that students may revise each topic with ease.

Available in all of our subjects.

Also included are subject-specific resources, including sample CBAs for Junior Cycle students, sample projects for Applied Maths students etc.

Only €49 per year!

The video support can be thought of as “byte-sized” one-to-one grinds.

If a student is at home studying and confused about a specific question, they can hop on to Google Meet and have a one-to-one discussion with Mr. Kenny (for up to five minutes per day, every school day), get that question answered while it’s fresh in their mind and then return to their study.

If a student is instead struggling with a topic in general, we instead recommend booking a full one-to-one grind or joining our weekly classes.

Absolutely!

Of course, to maximise the benefits of our sparks, we recommend signing up as early as possible.

The sooner, the better!

Our sparks are currently available in the following subjects:

Leaving Cert
Maths (all years & levels)
